Alexander McCall Smith's bestselling book "The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency" is being turned into a movie on location on Botswana, the film's producer said.

Award-winning British Hollywood director Anthony Minghella and his crew arrived this week for the shooting of the movie, to be carried out in Gaborone, the Okavango Delta and the Kalahari Desert, producer Amy J. Moore said.

Moore declined to give further details, saying that a formal announcement will be made on Tuesday, jointly with Tourism Minister Kitso Mokaila.

The movie will be the first of its kind to be shot in Botswana and more than 1,500 locals are set to benefit as they participate in support roles.

Auditions have been going on in Gaborone over the last three weeks, conducted by freelance coordinators.

US R&B diva Jill Scott has been selected to play the lead role of Precious Mma Ramotswe in the movie, Moore said.
