Oil's climb forced companies to become leaner
NEW YORK - Conventional wisdom had long held that some industries would collapse if oil topped $100 a barrel. As oil neared $150, sending costs higher for everything from jet fuel to plastic jars, the question was how many companies would succumb.

Toxic Bosses: How to Live with the S.O.B.
About two years ago I landed my dream job as a territory manager for a midsize technology company. I knew the sister of my prospective boss; she had been a business partner of mine for a number of years. She is a very relaxed, hardworking salesperson, and is well-known in the industry for being professional and effective. Unfortunately, the calm, effective, professional gene seemed to have skipped my friend's sibling. I took the job, and in a short period of time, I found that I was working for the classic toxic boss.

May We Have Your Attention, Please?
It's official: The average knowledge worker has the attention span of a sparrow. Roughly once every three minutes, typical cubicle dwellers set aside whatever they're doing and start something else -- anything else. It could be answering the phone, checking e-mail, responding to an instant message, clicking over to YouTube (NasdaqGS:GOOG - News), or posting something amusing on Facebook. Constant interruptions are the Achilles' heel of the information economy in the U.S. These distractions consume as much as 28% of the average U.S. worker's day, including recovery time, and sap productivity to the tune of $650 billion a year, according to Basex, a business research company in New York City.
