US regulator says flawed oversight fed financial crisis
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The head of the US financial regulator SEC has blamed a voluntary monitoring program for major investment banks as a cause of the global financial crisis and said he was shutting the program down.

NEW YORK - Financial markets remained on edge Friday after the Bush administration's proposal for a $700 billion banking bailout ran into opposition from Republican lawmakers. Stocks ended mixed, with big financial companies lifting the Dow Jones industrials more than 120 points, but worries about smaller banks and parts of the technology sector taking much of the market lower.

Clients of troubled money-market funds get help
BOSTON - Two brokerage firms told their customers Wednesday that they will cover up to $83 million of losses in a fallen money market fund, while clients of a Putnam Investments fund that suddenly closed last week were told their assets will be moved to another firm.

Buffett to invest $5 billion in Goldman
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc (BRKa.N) (BRKb.N) will invest $5 billion in Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N), in a major boost for the Wall Street bank from perhaps the world's best-known investor.
